Is Social Media more effective than traditional SEO?

This topic has been popping up recently and there is a lot of confusion about it.

With SEO, the basic theory is that if you optimize your website, you will get traffic. The quality of the traffic all depends on the quality of the keywords that you have optimized for. The quality of the keywords used will really be a reflection on the effort put into keyword research and testing.

SEO is not an exact science, but much of the ground work required is very similar. You can outsource most of the tasks required in SEO quite easily and the SEO professional only needs a basic understanding of your business to start work.

Social Media involves websites such as Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook. You have to sign up, create a profile and then start to build your network. You will write blogs about your company and try to create a following.

Social media is not a perfect science either. People that are great doing social media are not great at SEO. SEO is a more technical job and run behind the scene where Social media is all about communicating and meeting new people and building relationships. In this sense, it’s much harder to outsource a social media campaign. In order to outsource a social media campaign, the company really has to know your business and products.

So, is Social media more effective than SEO? No. Neither is better than the other. Using both is very helpful and, in this case, the sum of the parts equals the whole, one without the other is leaving you exposed somewhere.
